Sketches at the pro/con rally about abortion rights

pen & watercolor, 18 x 25 cm

A week ago I could pass the rally of pro/con for the abortion rights in front of the Constitutional Court located at Jae-dong, Jongno-gu. Lots of groups gathered for their opinions to affect the vote of judges about the constitutionality. The result was "unconstitutional". I could hear the shouts and sighs from both sides while drawing these. I felt just complicated though my pen was running on papers. I tried to put myself to others' shoes. I added colors at home later.

Sketches at the Geumsunsa(북한산 금선사)

outdoor scene of two buildings in the temple, pen, watercolor, A 4

Yesterday there was a special praying event to pray the peaceful rest of the ancestors. It was held to celebrate the finishing of the new big painting of seven buddhas at Banyajeon(praying hall). Lots of believers participated in the ceremony. It kept for three hours. During the service I drew two between bowing and reading ceremonial texts.

After having delicious lunch I did one seated on bench under warm sunlight. The air was really fine. I could feel the coming of spring. Though I didn't much I enjoyed the most wonderful atmosphere of the temple in Bughansan.

Thank you, Leeky, for joining to such special event! We were pleased so much by your being together.

Because I didn't draw many yesterday taking rest I add the previous drawings I'd done before as follows.

Every temple would be decorated by colorful lanterns on Buddha's birthday. I go there to celebrate and enjoy the beautiful scenery in spring season.

Ansimdang under construction

Though the scale of the temple is not big the nice features of big and small rocks make great scenery. I did this one with pencil.

I drew these ones during the ritual ceremony for my late father.

There is a space under big rock where water springs.

When water flows enough scenery is good too.

Thank you!

It was a little cold and cloudy but not terrible. There are so many nice places around the area such as Jogyesa temple, Unhyeongung palace, big musical instrument shopping mall, Bukchon Hanok village, and so on. Naturally lots of group tourists visit there. Streets are full of citizens and visitors. But nice sketching spots are there. And it's another joy to find them among crowded town.

Sketches by Yoo Byung Hwa

pencil, oil pastels, watercolor crayons, 19 x 26 cm

I began to learn billiard months ago registering a beginner program. It was interesting though very hard to hit two red balls. I think it's far more difficult than drawing on papers. It seems like to be of science, especially physics. These days I practice it at the billiard room often. Today YH Lee and I visited there we used to go for playing with other senior members. This time we planned to play by oneself and to have time for sketching while the other plays practicing the billiard. It was very good for both. I used two kinds of art material which I bought the other day. Watercolor crayons(12 colors) were nice to use and easy to carry on small bag too. Oil colors(12 colors) seemed to be useful and to make the drawing simple for I had to solve the color matter within narrow boundary of 12 sticks. Any time pencil was a good friend to me.

This week might be the most beautiful season in palace ground. Unhyeongung was like that with colorful leaves. Citizens with Korean traditional costume were enjoying taking photos with their family or friends. We were happy together on a fine Sunday.

.

Last Saturday weekend, our Seoul urban sketchers met at open square in front of Sewoon Plaza building in Jongno-gu, Seoul. Sewoon Shopping Center (세운상가) is the most famous electronics shopping area located between Jongno 3-ga and Toegyero 3-ga, which was well-known place as a symbol of the modernization of the electronics industry from the 1960s. But the Sewoon Shopping mall complex became old and deteriorated over the years, it has been remodeled from time to time as the need arises. Recently, The Dasi Sewoon Project (다시세운 프로젝트) transformed the old Sewoon Shopping Center into a hub of new industry through urban regeneration(도시재생).
It was so fine weather for sketching the newly renovated Sewoon Shopping Mall. I was impressed by the mixture of old and new buildings under the colorful urban skyline, walking along the three-story overhead pedestrian bridge between Sewoon Shopping Center and Daelim Shopping Center, which provided us with various attractions. Furthermore, Sewoon Plaza rooftop garden on the 9th floor is the best place to sketch colorful panoramic scenes of Seoul in all directions. I sketched the various scenes spread out horizontally before my eyes. While sketching the urbanscapes along the high-level pedestrian bridge and the rooftop garden, I experienced the diverse feeling of different eye level, new perspectives, free spaces from the crowds and vehicles, and so on. It was a pleasant and valuable sketch time in the bustling downtown Seoul.

Sketches at the Sewoon Shopping Center, Jongno-gu, Seoul

scenery seen from the left side of the Sewoon Shopping Center on 3rd F
pencil, watercolor, 38.5 x 26 cm

scenery seen from the bridge between the Sewoon Shopping Center and the Daelim Shopping center, pencil, watercolor, 38.5 x 26 cm

Sewoon Shopping Center has become the hot place for the visitors, students, and the urban sketchers to drop in in order to see how the urban renovation to change the scenery not hurting the original structure on a large scale. We could enjoy better environment to appreciate the beautiful scene on 9th rooftop.

At first I captured the old scenery of the area around the building remembering the previous shape covered by big awning materials. On the bridge connecting two shopping malls I sketched the bottom one. The air was not bad because it was a weekend and most of the stores on both streets were close. The weather was really good.

Thank you all!

Pianos at the Nagwon Music Arcade

pencil, 13 x 17.5 cm

Last month I dropped in the Nagwon Music Arcade, Jongno-gu. On 3rd floor I found a piano shop where lids of grand pianos were open. The angle made by lids, piano planes, and prods looked good to me. I drew it looking through the window standing there. Maybe the features those grand pianos made if one is to be sold and new one to be set. I would like to visit there again to see new scene those pianos would create.

Two sketches on a rainy day at Jongno

charcoal, conte, 19 x 26 cm

Today it rained so much. After lunch I dropped in Burger King Jongno district branch, Susong-dong as usual. Because the views seen through the big pane glasses on both sides is so great that I like to sketch the changing scenes by buildings under construction and colored leaves on trees. It was nice to see the colorful umbrellas inside having a cup of coffee. It got darker in heavy raining and got lighter after pouring. While drawing the second one a middle aged woman came to me and addressed to me. Her daughter is studying art in univ. She said that I looked so nice sketching alone. We shared talking about kids and ourselves. Though it was a short time the memory we shared might go long.
